Perez began her career as a teacher, but soon switched to working as a social worker. In 1980, she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from the University of Puerto Rico. In 1982, she moved to New York City, where she worked as a social worker for the city’s Department of Social Services. In 1986, she earned a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University.
In 1987, she began working as a clinical social worker at Bellevue Hospital Center. She has also worked as a private practice therapist and an adjunct professor at Hunter College. Perez is fluent in Spanish and English. She is married and has two children.

Mrs. Perez was a long-time supporter of the organization and we know that she would be grateful for any contributions made in her memory.
