Today we test the Mega wheels S5 for you. The scooter is not prepared to become a reference product and it does not outshine its competition. Rather, it is a scooter for purists, off road electric scooter for people who get by without frills. And for applications that do not require road approval. The model does not have this in Germany.
Shipping & Packaging
The e-scooter was ordered via Gearbest and delivered from the German warehouse within just three days. Since the prices there always fluctuate strongly, on 01.07. the device was shown with 345.44 € instead of 443 €. Experience has shown, however, that prices fluctuate down or up by a few euros every day. Included in delivery are the scooter, a user manual, the power supply, a bell, and a fastening tool. The packaging was also typical for e-scooters. A brown outer carton, in which the scooter carton and the parts are securely coated. Everything was as expected.
Assembly
As is so often the case with the Mega wheels S5, almost everything is pre-assembled. Only the brake has to be attached to the handlebar and the two handles are screwed on. An act of two minutes. The parts themselves are all of the value according to the price, you should not expect carbon here.
Haptics & Optics
The feel is appealing. The twelve-kilogram scooter makes a stable and valuable impression, the welds look clean. Only the griptape is not really cleanly processed or loosens easily. A downer. The look of the scooter is massive and slightly masculine.
Review
The scooter was quickly assembled and is already delivered with a half-full battery. So out to the test site. And gas. Kick in once, operate the throttle and the e-scooter rolls off. The acceleration is moderate and ends at 15 or 23 km/h depending on the desired setting. Thanks to the pneumatic tires, a suspension is not necessary and silently I roll along. The disc brake does a good job, although I have to readjust it again. Practical. When the (disc) brake is applied, the rear light is activated. On the sides, the scooter has reflectors installed to be seen better. Also contributing to safety is the fact that the scooter has good grips. You have the handlebars safely in your hands. The handling of the scooter is pleasing and meets my expectations. When not in use, the scooter can be practically folded up or parked thanks to the stand.
Charging: The charging socket is located on the handlebar of the scooter. The manufacturer offers two plugs, one fits into our domestic sockets.
No frills: Many models have useless stuff on board. A USB charging socket, speakers, underbody LEDs, and what else is not available. The Megawheels S5 is more of a purist in the test. He has everything that is necessary, but nothing beyond that. Because even a speed display is in vain. However – so my previous impression – you always hold the throttle to the stop anyway and drive what the scooter gives. In this case, the 15 or 23 kilometers per hour.
The display only shows you the battery capacity and in which of the two speed modes you are. As I said, it’s puristic. There is also no app. This not only has disadvantages, because here you neither have to establish a connection nor distract yourself while driving with gimmicks. I like it.
The folding mechanism makes a valuable impression. It is not as smooth as, for example, the Ninebot ES 2, but that does not matter, it can be solved well and seems to be very robust.
What did I particularly like?
First of all, the running board is quite wide and thus also large feet fit on the scooter. The handlebar height is also pleasant for tall people, for people under 1.60 meters I could imagine that the scooter is a bit too high. In addition: The safety package with rear light, disc brake and pneumatic tires is good.
