These small stone monuments serve as a reminder of a person’s life and can come in a variety of sizes and styles.
They also appear in scary movies and books as a common Halloween decoration. That’s why learning to draw a tombstone can be a fun way to get into the Halloween spirit!

How to Draw A Tombstone
Step 1
Gravestones often have a very specific style or shape in their structure, and we’re going to recreate a classic example of drawing a gravestone in this guide.
To start this process, let’s start with the top of the tombstone.
When drawing this headstone, remember that it is a thick slab of stone, and you should consider it when drawing the depth of the headstone.
With this in mind, we’ll use a combination of straight and curved lines to create the shape of the top of the tombstone. The top is wide and tapers with each layer of the shape to Draw A Tombstone.
Now that you’ve drawn this outline, you can draw the depth we discussed by extending a few curved lines “backwards” from the tombstone.
Step 2
In this next step, we will add details and texture to the tombstone design. First, we draw a small ridge near the top of the tombstone.
This ridge will go just below where you stopped drawing in the last step. You can style it by adding subtle rectangular shapes to the corners in the reference image.
Once this crest is drawn, we draw another line inside the outline for the top tip of the tombstone, as shown in the reference image.
Finally, we’ll draw straight lines from the top of the tombstone to create the sides. It’s best to draw these lines freehand, as we want them to look like they’re made of raw stone to Draw A Tombstone.
Step 3
This image is starting to take shape now! In this third step of our guide to drawing a tombstone, we will draw its base.
First, extend the lines you drew for the sides of the tombstone a little further down. Once that’s done, you can use more straight lines to create the base of the tombstone.
As you do this, try to copy the angles of the line we used in our reference image. Then you can add some decorative elements in the next step to Draw A Tombstone!
Step 4
Now that you have the general outline of your headstone design, we can start adding some finer details at this step.
First, we’ll draw many rounded shapes near the base of the tombstone to create some lumps of dirt and rock.
It wouldn’t be a spooky tombstone without a RIP, so now we’ll draw that on the face of the tombstone.
The RIP is drawn with clean, simple text that you can copy from the reference image. You can also use a different font or style or draw a name or other text information.
An elaborate cross is then drawn near the top of the tombstone. You can finish by drawing some big cracks on the tombstone to make it look old and weathered. The next step is adding some final details and elements to finish it right to Draw A Tombstone!
Step 5
Before adding some colour to this image, we first need to add some detail and finishing touches in this step of our guide on drawing a tombstone.
The tombstone already looks pretty old and weathered, but with these final touches, we’ll make it look even better!
We’ve added several scuffs, chips, and cracks to give it an even older look. Depending on how old you want them to look, you can add more or less of these details to Draw A Tombstone.
For an added twist, you can draw something like a ghost or skeleton to give this image a Halloween feel.
Step 6
Because they are made of stone, tombstones are generally less colorful. In our example of this tombstone design, we used shades of gray to create shading and weathering effects.

If you want to add an atmospheric feel to this image, one idea would be to use a light white wash with watercolor paint around the base of the tombstone. This will make it appear as if a blanket of fog is wrapping around the tombstone.
