    Five Productivity Myths Busted

We are always looking to reach our full potential and harness the power of our minds. We aim to maximize our productivity to excel in life. If you look up ways to enhance productivity, you will encounter a plethora of articles advising on how to do so.

From going on walks to eating right, you will come across all sorts of advice to become more productive. Some of these articles are just contradicting each other, leaving one wondering what to believe and what not to believe.

The reality of the matter is that productivity is subjective. There is so much information and misinformation about productivity online which just leaves one extremely confused.

We are here to set the record straight, once and for all. Here are five common productivity myths busted.

    Table of Contents

    • There Is Only One Approach to Being Productive
    • Being Productive Requires Multitasking
    • Working Longer Equates to Getting More Work Done
    • Sleeping Less Will Help You Work More
    • The Hustle Culture
    • Final Thoughts

There Is Only One Approach to Being Productive

There is no standardized approach to being productive. It looks different for different people. We are sold this idea by people online that productivity is the same for everyone. We are told that being productive is working a 9 to 5 office job when that is not the case always.

If you have to take care of kids or your family, your approach will be different compared to someone who does not have those additional responsibilities. Some may feel most productive working from an office and following a strict schedule whereas others prefer a flexible work-from-home arrangement. It is all about figuring out what works best for you.

    Being Productive Requires Multitasking

Multitasking could mean doing multiple things at once or switching between tasks swiftly. Many consider it the most effective way of being productive but this is not necessarily the truth. It may work for some people, whereas others may find it to be exhausting.

Some find it useful to take a break from a task and focus on another before returning to the first one with newfound focus and perspective. Others need to stay focused on one task to get it done on time most effectively. Multitasking in the long term may not have the best effect. A study by Stanford argues that individuals constantly bombarded with different electronic information lose attention and have difficulty retaining data.

Working Longer Equates to Getting More Work Done

Perhaps the biggest misconception we have about productivity is that the more hours we put in, the more productive we can be. This is not the case. Working longer hours will only lead to exhaustion and fatigue. If anything, it will reduce net productivity.

Work smart, not hard. Studies covering work ethics in different populations reflect that working hard does not always equate to greater productivity. Figure out a productivity system that works best for you and make sure to incorporate enough breaks for optimized productivity.

Sleeping Less Will Help You Work More

We often see millionaires talking about only getting an hour or two hours of sleep a day, and we consider that the most effective way to work. It is important to understand that this may not work for you. It might even be counterproductive.

We are all unique and what drives us to work efficiently may not be the same as others. Compromising sleep in hopes of getting more work done is a poorly thought strategy. Sleep is important to function properly. Not getting enough sleep can lead to compromised health and cognitive abilities.

    The Hustle Culture

Social media has permeated all aspects of our life. There seems to be a prevalent theme across these platforms that pushes an ‘always hustling’ narrative. Users are given the impression that one needs to be always productive to be productive at all. This is neither true nor possible.

There will be days when you feel down in the dumps, sick, or unable to function. It is normal to experience setbacks and failure. This hyper-positive image perpetuated by social media is nothing but a hoax.
